Kittery, ME is a great combination of the very (very) old and the new. Settled in 1623, it is the oldest town in Maine. With just a short drive through town you will see evidence of this in the historic homes that pepper the coast. The First Congregational Church in town was built in 1730 and is still in use today. Though history abounds there are many new places that are well worth your time. Kittery Foreside is teeming with new restaurants, cafes and stores that you will not want to miss. With just a short drive to the full coast of Maine and vibrant downtown Portsmouth, NH the opportunities in and around Kittery are endless.

A Restaurant to Try: Warren’s Lobster House

Warren's is a classic place to visit in Kittery for fresh and exciting lunch or dinner. More than just a restaurant, Warren’s features a gift shop, the “Lobster Trap” lounge, a candy store, and a full-service restaurant. While the lobster may be their specialty you will not want to miss the expansive salad bar. This is a tried and true Kittery establishment so if you have not tried it now is the time. Need breakfast to tide you over? Lovebirds Donuts is one of the new places we love in Kittery. They opened in 2019 and their donuts are to die for. These are not your typical donuts; their “swanky” donuts feature a strawberry shortcake, raspberry coconut, and blueberry jam.

A Place to Explore: Fort McClary State Park

Fort McClary is a former defensive fortification for the US military but is now a waterfront paradise and is perfect for walking or picnicking but also provides opportunities for rock climbing and exploration. The view from the fort is of the scenic waterfront vista and you can see the two lighthouses in the harbor. This less known park is a great way to spend a few hours and is well worth your time to experience a piece of Maine history.

Love Shopping?

Kittery is home to an expansive outlet mall that is coveted by Mainers and out-of-staters alike. In the heart of the outlets is Kittery Trading Post, a hunting, fishing, and sporting-goods store which has been family owned and operated for more than 80 years. If shopping new isn’t your thing, don’t fret; small antique shops are also common in Kittery.
